Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, the leading scorer in NBA history (38,387), will finally be honored by the Los Angeles Lakers with a 16-foot, 1,500-pound bronze statue at Star Plaza Friday afternoon. Abdul-Jabaar made news over a year ago when he told the media he felt “slighted” by the franchise's lack of acknowledgement of his contribution to the success of the Lakers.  Today, those feelings will be washed away as the statue, created by sculptors/artists Julie Rotblatt Amrany and Omri Amrany, will be erected next to those already honoring Wayne Gretzky, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Jerry West, Chick Hearn and Oscar De La Hoya.

The ceremony will commence Friday at 4:30PM, with the actual unveiling taking place at approximately 5:15PM. It will be emceed by Stu Lantz and will feature speeches by Earvin “Magic” Johnson, James Worthy, Jerry West, Pat Riley, Eddie Doucette, Richard Lapchik, Jeanie Buss, and Tim Leiweke. The event will take place just west of Figueroa Street and the Chick Hear Court intersection. The ceremony can be seen live on TWC SportsNet.
